Using MEDELA Nipple Shield

Many asked me, how to use the Nipple Shield..Most of them were SUSUIBU.COM forummer :)

Early latch-on problems are not unusual. For most mothers, breastfeeding takes a bit of practice! Made of thin, soft, silicone that doesn’t interfere with nipple stimulation, the Medela nipple shield is worn during breastfeeding. Holes at the tip allow milk to flow to the baby. Anyway, here is the guidelines:

1.Correct latch is important

A good latch is especially important when the mother is using a shield. The baby’s jaws must close on the breast, not out on the shaft of the nipple shield. Sucking only on the nipple pinches off the milk flow and fails to stimulate the milk supply. The baby will not get enough milk, and growth may be affected.

2.Cleaning the shield is important.

It is necessary to keep the nipple shield clean. Wash in hot soapy water and rinse in lots of hot water after each use. Boil once daily.

3.Choosing the correct size shield is important.

Choose the right size shield for the size of the baby’s mouth. If a shield is too big, the baby cannot adequately draw up the mother’s nipple, or may gag on the shield. The Newborn Small size shield is best for most small babies.. Medela makes several types of nipple shields, the Newborn Small, Newborn Regular, and Contact™ Nipple Shields in two sizes

4.Helpful Hints:

Sit the shield on the nipple with the brim turned up like a hat. Then smooth down the edges. This will help the shield stick better. Moistening the edges will also hold it in place. Some mothers have larger nipples than the small shield can accommodate. Try the next largest size. However, observe carefully to see if this size works for the baby. A shield will not solve all problems, and sometimes other equipment may be appropriate.

Menyusukan Anak Angkat -PART 2

Problem yang selalu timbuk dalam minda ibu angkat: macamana nak me ‘muhrim’kan bayi -masalah ni bila dewasa nanti...So kat bawah saya bagi a little bit detail dr post saya sebelum ni..

PERMULAAN PROGRAM

Mula2, digalakkan ibu2 ambil cuti (bagi yang bekerja) sekurang-kurangnya 2 minggu dan seelok-eloknya 2 bulan. Kita bermula dgn kosong, dan juga kita tak tahu bila susu si ibu akan keluar. Jadi, ibu digalakkan berada bersama anak 24 jam sepanjang masa, selama 2 minggu atau 2 bulan. Disini saya galakkan papa bercuti sama utk sama2 membantu isteri yang baru pertama kali mengurus hal si anak kecil. Ini adalah pengorbanan terbesar utk pastikan matlamat ini tercapai. Ibu digalakkan beri tumpuan sepenuhnya pada baby. Kalau boleh, selama 2 minggu tak usah kemana2, atau menerima tetamu hanya pd waktu malam. Kerana penumpuan masa ini sgtlah penting utk memastikan ransangan antara bayi-ibu.

Hari pertama baby di tangan ibu, anda tentunya sudah mula mengambil pil hormon (PERLU diingatkan pil hormon adalah prescribe by the doctor- i wont reveal it here to avoid any problem in future). yang pastinya, pil hormon ini adakalanya menyebabkan ibu mengantuk, lesu dan pelbagai kesan lain. Terdapat juga suntikan utk mematangkan buah dada lebih cepat supaya susu akan dikeluarkan lebih cepat. Juga ibu2 harus ingat, susu tidak akan keluar serta merta dgn sekali ransangan.

Program ini mengambil masa adakalanya 30 hari, adakalanya 60 hari. Jgn putus berdoa, jgn putus usaha.

Pam 3 jam sekali selain beri ransangan pd puting payudara.

SNS adalah satu alat yang digunakan oleh ibu yang ingin menyusui anak angkat mereka, untuk bayi yang mempunysi masalah cleft palate atau sumbing, baby premature atau lahir tak cukup bulan atau relaktasi semula bg ibu yang telah kekurangan susu atau ingin menyusukan bayi mereka semula.

Hujung tiub dilekatkan hingga hujung nipple ibu. Dont worry, tiub unnoticed by baby kerana tiub tersebut adalah lembut dan halus. Pastikan ia terlebih /extend 5mm dr nipple dan kedudukan adalah vertical dan di atas nipple, bukan di tepi kanan atau kiri nipple.
si ibu akan mengisi susu formula (permulaan) didalam botol tersebut. Bila baby melekap pd aerola/breast ibu, dia juga akan melekap pd tiub halus tu. jadi baby akan hisap susu formula tersebut, pd masa yang sama akan menghisap breast si ibu. jadi disitu proses stimulasi pd breast si ibu akan bermula. Ibu akan dapati terdapat PERUBAHAN pd breastnya seperti membesar, aerola/tampuk hitam berwarna lebih gelap dan ibu mula merasai “tingling sensation” atau rasa picitan/nyeri. Baby akan menghisap breast ibu setiap feeding time dia (feeding on demand) walaupun pd mulanya meminum susu formula. proses stimulasi ini akan meningkatkan kadar prolaktin utk penghasilan lebih bnyk susu. Ibu juga harus tenang, sentiasa berperasaan sedang menyusukan anak.. utk meransang hormon oksitosin yg akan memancutkan susu keluar. Susu yang keluar pd awal biasanya berwarna jernih seperti air beras dan putih seperti susu biasa. Walaupun susu awal kolostrum yang berwarna kuning pekat tidak akan keluar, namun saya pasti ia cukup buat anda teruja kerana susu telah keluar dr breast anda! =) Lama kelamaan anda akan dapati payudara anda bengkak dan susu mula dihasilkan! teruskan direct feed baby anda, InsyaAllah usaha anda berbaloi! Namun, cara-cara perlekapan (latch) yg betul mesti dipelajari sejak awal utk mengelakkan bayi anda keliru puting dan menolak puting anda. Percayalah, anda boleh =) If ibu mengalami kesusahan pd awal2nya, itu adalah perkara biasa. Practise makes perfect.

Selain itu, ibu harus mengepam regularly utk meransang breast menghasilkan lebih bnyk susu. Disini konsep supply and demand berlaku. Lebih banyak ibu feed baby, mengepam dan mengosongkan payudara, lebih bnyk susu akan dihasilkan.

Masalah Ibu Yang Bekerja

Saya sering dapati ibu-ibu yang bekerja mengalami masalah penyusuan khususnya pada waktu bekerja dan ini menjadi faktor utama mengapa ibu-ibu tidak terus memberi susu badan selepas waktu pantang. Ketika ibu bekerja beberapa masalah timbul seperti buah dadanya bengkak kerana penuh dengan susu. Ini menyebabkan susu meleleh keluar dan membasahi bajunya.

Sebenarnya masalah ini boleh diatasi jika ibu-ibu mengetahui cara memerah susu.
Jika ibu bekerja, pada waktu yang sepatutnya anak menyusu, bolehlah diperah keluar dengan menggunakan sejenis pam khas untuk menyedut susu ibu. Terdapat berbagai-bagai jenis breast pump di pasaran yang boleh diberli .
Susu yang disedut keluar di pejabat boleh disimpan dalam botol dan kemudiannya dimasukkan ke dalam peti sejuk. Lakukan ini setiap tiga jam sekali. Apabila hendak digunakan, botol susu tadi direndamkan dalam air panas sebelum diberikan kepada bayi. Dengan ini ibu itu tidak membazir susunya. Memerah susu dengan menggunakan pam susu ini boleh menentukan pengeluaran susu yang berterusan dan menjauhkan masalah susu menjadi kering. Jika terdapat pusat jagaan bayi di pejabat, ini tentulah akan dapat mengatasi masalah yang saya nyatakan tadi dan bayi akan sentiasa mendapat susu ibunya.
Satu lagi cara yang mungkin boleh dilakukan ialah dengan menghantar susu yang telah siap diperah ini kepada anak yang tinggal di rumah atau pusat jagaan atau ibu sendiri pulang ke rumah menyusukannya sendiri. Ini juga boleh mengelakkan bayi diberi susu lembu semasa ibunya tiada di rumah.
Pergantungan bayi terhadap susu lembu menerusi botol kadangkala boleh menyebabkan ia menolak langsung susu ibu. Ini memang menjadi satu masalah kepada ramai ibu yang bekerja. Saya ingin menyatakan di sini susu ibu yang dipam atau disedut keluar boleh disimpan dalam freezer untuk beberapa waktu tanpa rosak atau berubah khasiat dan mutu makanan yang terkandung dalam susu itu. Apabila ia dikehendaki, cairkan dahulu dengan meletakkannya di luar dan kemudian dipanaskan sebelum ia diberi kepada bayi.

Persediaan Penyusuan

Penyusuan ibu memerlukan persediaan sejak dari awal lagi khususnya sejak ibu mula mengandung. Puting susu bolehlah dibersihkah dengan air panas atau sabun. Buah dada juga elok diurut menghala ke arah puting. Segala kekotoran pada puting buah dada perlu dibersihkan kerana ini boleh menyebabkan aliran susu tersumbat. Kejayaan penyusuan juga banyak bergantung kepada taraf kesihatan dan pemakanan ibu yang mengandung. Jika ibu mengalami sebarang masalah kesihatan dan masalah kekurangan zat pemakanan, keadaan ini boleh menjejaskan atau mengganggu proses penyusuan. Penting bagi ibu mendapatkan sumbet zat protein yang mencukupi, vitamin serta zat logam khususnya zat besi kerana zat pemakanan ini akan masuk ke dalam air susu bagi memenuhi keperluan bayi.
Sebaik sahaja bayi dilahirkan, letakkan pada putting susu ibu kerana proses penghisapan akan mempercepatkan dan mempermudahkan pengeluaran air susu. Biasanya pada hari pertama atau hari kedua selepas kelahiran, air susu belum banyak keluar, malah kadang-kadang tidak ada langsung. Saya ingin menegaskan penghisapan putting perlu dilakukan berulang-ulang kali untuk mempercepatkan proses pembentukan air susu.
Pada waktu ini sesetengah wanita mengeluarkan air jernih bukan susu yang digelar colostrums. Ini juga mengandungi khasiat pemakanan yag baik untuk bayi. Pada hari pertama dan berikutnya jika susu ibu tidak mencukupi, bayi boleh diberikan susu botol.
Biasanya susu keluar pada hari kedua atau ketiga, namun demikian ada sesetengah ibu susunya keluar lebih lambat seperti tiga hingga lima hari kemudian. Kelambatan ini tidak perlu dibimbangkan kerana susu pasti akan keluar juga akhirnya.
Bagi ibu yang melahirkan anak sulung, proses penyusuan adalah satu pengalaman baru. Ibu mungkin terasa kekok pada mulanya. Sedutan atau hisapan bayi yang terlalu kuat mungkin menimbulkan rasa sakit. Jika percubaan pertama atau berikutnya masih gagal untuk memberi hisapan yang sepuasnya kepada bayi, kita tidak perlu putus asa dan terus memberhentikan usaha untuk menyusukan bayi. Seperti yang saya nyatakan tadi, jika kita berulang-ulang kali meletakkan bayi pada puting buah dada, dia akan cuba menghisap. Kadangkala bayi berasa hampa dan menangis kerana tidak ada susu yang keluar pada hari pertama dan kedua.

Apakah Pilihan Ibu?

Ibu yang baru sahaja melahirkan anak mempunyai dua pilihan penyusuan iaitu memberi susu sendiri atau susu botol yang menggunakan susu lembu. Saya suka menyarankan, adalah lebih baik ibu-ibu memberi susu sendiri kerana banyak kelebihannya berbanding dengan susu lembu.
Susu ibu tidak seperti susu lembu yang memerlukan wang untuk membelinya. Ia mudah didapati dengan tidak memerlukan botol dan mudah diberikan kepada bayi bila-bila masa sahaja dalam apa jua keadaan. Di samping itu susu ibu mempunyai khasiat yang tinggi dari segi kandungan zat pemakanan. Ia mudah dihadam oleh bayi yang masih mempunyai sistem penghadaman yang kurang matang dan mendapati sukar untuk menghadam makanan yang lain daripada susu ibu. Ia juga mengandungi satu bahan pelindung untuk melawan penyakit iaitu antibodi. Dengan itu ia dapat memberi pertahanan kepada bayi yang baruÂ lahir terhadap serangan jangkitan kuman.
Oleh itu susu ibu terkandung dalam satu takungan yang jarang-jarang dimasuki kuman, risiko bayi mendapat jangkitan kuman dari penyusuan ibu adalah jauh lebih rendah berbanding dengan penyusuan botol. Satu perkara yang amat penting dan perlu difikirkan dengan mendalam oleh ibu-ibu ialah penyusuan ibu boleh menjalin hubungan yang lebih rapat antara ibu dengan bayinya.

Susu Lembu
Jelaslah susu ibu mempunyai manfaat yang tiada tandingannya. Seperti yang saya nyatakan tadi, untuk mendapatkan susu lembu, kita terpaksalah mengeluarkan perbelanjaan yang mungkin boleh digunakan untuk membeli makanan yang berkhasiat. Walau bagaimana baik pun susu formula itu dibuat ia tetaplah daripada susu lembu yang masih tidak setanding dengan susu ibu. Dalam hal ini perlu saya nyatakan bahawa susu pekat manis dalam tin yang biasa kita gunakan untuk membuat minuman tidak sesuai untuk bayi.
Terdapat banyak jenis susu untuk bayi di pasaran dengan jenama yang berlainan dan fomula yang agak berlainan sedikit tetapi khasiatnya tidak banyak berbeza antara satu sama lain. Apa yang ketara hanyalah perbezaan dalam harga antara satu jenis dengan jenis yang lain. Ada sesetengah ibu sengaja membeli susu tepung yang lebih mahal kerana ini dapat dikaitkan dengan simbol status. Perlu diingat, susu yang mahal itu tidak bermakna banyak khasiat atau setanding dengan susu ibu. Semua susu tepung adalah sama, iaitu diperbuat daripada susu lembu.

Jika Tidak Boleh Menyusu
Sebaiknya setiap ibu perlu menyusukan anaknya sendiri. Jika ibu mengalami beberapa masalah barulah membuat pilihan dengan menggunakan susu lembu. Antara masalah yang mungkin menyebabkan seseorang ibu itu terpaksa menyusukan secara botol ialah:
Jangkitan kuman pada buah dada menyebabkan buah dada menjadi bengkak dan bernanah (abcess).
Ibu yang sakit tenat seperti penyakit jantung dan tidak berdaya untuk menyusukan bayi. Ibu ini juga dinasihatkan supaya tidak menyusukan bayinya.
Ibu-ibu yang mempunyai masalah pada putting susu seperti inverted nipple. Masalah ini kadangkala boleh diatasi dengan menggunakan sejenis alat yang boleh membetulkan keadaan putting buah dadanya. Ini boleh diajarkan oleh doktor.

When faced with lactation problems, you feel helpless. The little newborn needs to eat and the nursing just isn't working like it should. A solution to increase your milk supply is to use a nursing supplementer. This useful device not only increases milk supply, but encourages improved suckling and enables adoptive mothers to nurse their baby. Here is how to use a nursing supplementer

Determine the Kind of Supplementation Your Baby Needs
Step 1

Notify your pediatrician and obstetrician about your lactation difficulty. Most pediatricians will want to weigh the baby every 3 to 5 days in the beginning and check for dehydration. Your obstetrician can prescribe certain drugs or may recommend certain herbal tinctures that may help you increase your milk supply.

Step 2

Contact a lactation consultant. Ask her for a recommendation of what type of supplementer to get. The two popular brands available are the Lact-Aid and Medela's SNS.

Step 3
Read the directions thoroughly. Each supplementer works in basically the same way, but each will have its own quirks to get it to work right.

Set Up the Supplementer
Step 1
Fill the bag or bottle with pumped breast milk or formula. Set it on a paper towel or in its filler stand to keep it clean.

Step 2
Select the size tubing right for your baby. The tubing comes in three sizes, small, medium and large diameter. The supplementer directions may tell you to start with the largest tubing and work down to the smallest, but ask your lactation consultant which is the best size for your situation.

Step 3
Tighten the tube cap on the bottle or bag and, if the bottle has more than one tube, tape one tube to the bottle. This will leave you with only one rubber tube to wrestle away from your baby.

Step 4
Secure the string attachment around your neck. The bottle or bag should rest slightly above your breasts on your chest with the tube end at about the midline.

Step 5
Tape the other tube just beyond the tip of your nipple on your nursing breast using gentle paper tape. You might find it easier to tape down the length of the tube rather than across the tube like some supplementer's directions. Do not put tape beyond the edge of your areola because this skin is very sensitive.

Latching On and Nursing With the Supplementer
Step 1
Bring baby to your breast. Keep the baby's nose even with your nipple.

Step 2
Latch baby on while trying to keep the tubing even with your nipple. The tube sometimes slips out and some babies even spit out the tubing but have patience, this is the most difficult part of the whole process. With a little practice both of you will know what to expect.

Step 3
Keep an eye on the supplementer for air going into the bottle. If air is not going into the supplementer, it will create a vacuum and the baby can't get any formula or breast milk out.

Step 4
Let the baby lead the feeding. Don't be alarmed if your little one doesn't take as much as you think he should. He is getting some breast milk and your body should be producing more.

Step 5
Remove the tape gently and if any seems to be stuck, rub some olive oil on it to loosen it. Wash the oil off before nursing again.

Domperidone. This drug can help you produce more milk. It is not necessary for you to use in order to breastfeed an adopted baby, but it will help you develop a more abundant milk supply faster.

There is no such thing as a 100% safe drug. If you do decide to take it, the dose is 20 mg four times a day. Check the handout for more information. Ask at the clinic. Using pumping and domperidone, most adopting mothers have started to produce drops of milk after two to four weeks.

Sabtu minggu lepas saya ke rumah salah seorang kenalan. Biasanya untuk menunjukkan demo pam MEDELA. Kenalan ni baru melahirkan anak..Cute baby!! Seorang wanita umur awal 20-an memakai cermin mata sedang mendukung bayi yang berumur 10 hari. Bayi tersebut ada jaundice. then batuk selama 3 hari dan merupakan anak pertama.
Setelah saya buat physical checking kepada anaknya (chewah), saya mula la nak bertanya-tanya.
Ain : Bayi ni menyusu badan ke menyusu botol?
Rakan : Menyusu botol.
Ain : Mengapa x breastfeed?
Rakan : Saya dah cuba sekali selepas bersalin tetapi tak keluar susu. Lepas tu saya terus susukan guna botol.Dah menagis kelaparan...
Ain : Memang lah awal-awal adakalanya susu tak keluar. Lama-lama banyak lah.
Rakan : Bukanla. Mak saya pun dulu tak ada susu. Dah keturunan saya mcam tu (!!)(Dia menjawab dengan muka selamba. Muka dia memandang bawah. Saya sudah mula naik hangat)Ain : Kalau tak bagi susu ibu nanti anak senang kena penyakit. Anak lahir kat mana?

Hmmm... mukanya masih poyo. Nampak semua persoalan saya, dia dah sediakan jawapan. Walaupun jawapan yang poyo...Bila dia jawab macam tu, saya pun tak nak lah jadi poyo macam dia. Saya bagi pandangan kesian (kat anak dia) tetapi sedikit geram.
Kalau perkara mengarut seperti tidak menyusu ibu kerana keturunannya tidak ada susu, saya masih boleh terima lagi tetapi kalau dah "malas", apa lagi nak buat. Entah-entah dia bagi jawapan "malas" sebab "malas" nak menjawab soalan merapu saya yang seperti nak menjaga tepi kain dia tu...alahai...sian ibu2..dan anak2...minum susu lembu???

Ingat la saya bahawa Islam sangat menganjurkan penyusuan susu badan.“Peranan ibu yang utama ialah menyusukan anak dengan susu badan seperti yang ditentukan dalam al-Quran. Ini sudah ditunjukkan ibu Nabi Muhammad, Aminah. Penyusuan ibu kepada bayi adalah penting terutama dalam tempoh enam bulan awal pertama kelahirannya. Oleh kerana itu semua ibu digalakkan menyusui anaknya dengan susu ibu saja dari lahir sehingga berumur enam bulan pertama secara ekslusif dan meneruskannya sehingga mencapai umur dua tahun.
Ia bermakna, dari lahir sehingga mencapai usia enam bulan bayi diberi susu ibu saja dan tidak perlu makanan pelengkap, susu tambahan ataupun air.
Ketua Jururawat dan Koordinator Hospital Rakan Bayi, Elizabeth Muthu, berkata susu ibu sudah mempunyai khasiat yang cukup lengkap termasuk omega, vitamin dan mineral lain yang diperlukan bayi,Justeru ibu tidak perlu risau untuk memberinya makanan lain malah susu ibu juga mengandungi bahan pencegah penyakit (antibodi) dan ini dapat mengurangkan penyakit kepada bayi.
Elizabeth berkata, Kebaikan lain menyusui anak dengan susu ibu ialah tidak perlu dibayar berbanding membeli susu formula yang ada harganya begitu mahal. Selain itu, susu ibu juga memudahkan penghadaman dan membantu perkembangan daya intelek yang lebih baik pada bayi. Bagi ibu pula penyusuan sepenuhnya pada bayi dapat mengelakkannya mengalami bengkak payudara. Pada masa sama, ia dapat mengeratkan kasih sayang.
Jika ibu memberi penyusuan secara ekslusif selama enam bulan pertama pada bayi, tidak perlu risau untuk memberikannya air kerana berasakan bayi haus atau susu badan yang diberi tidak cukup. Sebenarnya susu ibu mengandungi 70 peratus air dan ia cukup untuk menggalakkan tumbesarannya," katanya.
Elizabeth berkata, bayi perlu diberikan penyusuan susu ibu dengan kerap sekurang-kurangnya 8 hingga 12 kali dalam sehari.
Bagaimanapun untuk mendapat penyusuan susu ibu yang eksklusif bukanlah mudah bagi kebanyakan ibu pada masa kini. Terdapat beberapa halangan yang ada kalanya membuatkan ibu putus asa lalu menggantikannya dengan susu formula kepada bayi.
Antara alasan lazim yang diberi kerana berhenti menyusu badan ialah tidak cukup atau tidak ada susu. Ibu membuat anggapan bahawa bekalan susunya tidak cukup. Selain itu ibu memberi tahu berasa risau kerana bayinya kerap menangis, masih tidak puas selepas menyusu.
"Sama ada saiz payu dara ibu kecil atau besar,l adalah mengarut jika menyatakan bayi tidak cukup menyusu badan. Ibu perlu bina keyakinan dirinya setiap kali menyusu anak dan pastikan cara penyusuan dibuat dengan betul. Apa pun bekalan susu yang kurang boleh dirawat. It is important that a woman know and weigh her choices carefully to try to choose the right pump the first time. Why Breastfeed?

With over half the women in the United States choosing to breastfeed their infants these days (as opposed to twenty-five percent in the mid sixties), it is obvious that today the majority of women are aware of the many benefits of breastfeeding. When asked why they chose to nurse their baby, most mothers will mention the health advantages, as well as the special closeness they share with their baby. What many are not aware of are the many advantages not just to baby and mother, but to the entire family, as well as to society as a whole.

Advantages to baby include:
Human milk is biologically specific for human babies. Simply put, this means that each species of mammal makes a milk that is uniquely suited for its young. Cow’s milk is high in protein and minerals because baby calves are up and running within hours after birth – rapid muscle and bone growth is necessary for their survival.

In contrast, the human survival organ is the brain. Human milk is high in factors that promote brain growth. This means that children who were breastfed tend to score higher on IQ tests, due to the beneficial effects of human milk on neurodevelopment.

As a side note: why not choose a mammal closer to humans to provide an artificial milk supplement for human infants – a primate, perhaps? Can you imagine a gorilla sitting passively, attached to a milking machine like a cow? Not very likely, but kind of fun to think about.
Human milk contains enzymes, hormones, and immunoglobulins that simply can’t be duplicated in formula, although formula manufacturers keep trying. They advertise that their brand is “most like mother’s milk”, but even they agree that breastmilk is best. Look on the can of formula – it says so right on the label. Since breastmilk is always raw and fresh, you don’t lose any of the nutrients that are destroyed in formula processing.

Breastmilk is living tissue that changes to meet your baby’s nutritional needs, and to protect him against disease. The fat content of human milk varies month to month, day to day, and even hour to hour. For example, the milk produced for a premature infant is higher in protein and calories than milk produced for a full-term infant, giving the tiny baby what he needs to catch up on growth. In cold climates, human milk contains more fat – in warm climates, more water. If your baby is very hungry, he nurses more vigorously and receives more fatty hind milk. If he is just thirsty, he feeds more leisurely and receives a lower calorie milk. As he gets older, the fat content of the milk will gradually decrease because his growth will slow, and he will need fewer calories per pound of weight. Standards for formula are based on data about pooled human milk, so every serving of formula is the same. Human milk constantly adjusts during the whole time your baby is nursing.
Human milk also changes to protect your baby against germs. This is especially important during the first six months of life while his immature system is gradually building his own supply of germ fighting elements, or immunoglobulins. You provide these through your milk for as long as you breastfeed. If you or your baby are exposed to a germ, your milk begins producing antibodies which protect him from the same germs. The white cells in your milk produce a special protein which coats his intestines, preventing the passage of harmful germs from his intestinal tract into his bloodstream. The concentration of antibodies in your milk actually increases as your infant gets older and nurses less often, thus continuing to provide protection as long as you nurse.
Breastmilk contains antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antprotozoal factors as well as antibodies to many specific disease organisms. Breastfed babies have a lower incidence of infection, anemia, diarrhea, meningitis, diabetes, gastroenteritis, asthma, constipation, allergies, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, dental and speech problems, childhood cancer, pulmonary disease, cataracts, high cholesterol, and many more. Artificially fed babies are three to four times as likely as bottle-fed infants to suffer from ear infections and lower respiratory infections, and sixteen times more likely to be sick during the first two months of life.

Let’s not forget the importance of the emotional security and closeness to mother than nursing infants enjoy. Anyone who has ever seen a baby blissfully drifting off to sleep while nursing, or being comforted at the breast during periods of stress, knows that breastfeeding offers much more than nutritional and immunological advantages.. Breastfeeding ensures that the baby will have lots of physical contact with his mother – there is no way to ‘prop’ a breast! Rather than making babies more dependent, studies have shown that nursing makes babies more independent as they grow up, since their needs have been met so effectively while they were infants.

Advantages to mother include:
Continuation of your natural reproductive cycle. Breastfeeding suppresses ovulation and delays the return of fertility. In mothers who exclusively breastfeed (no bottles, unrestricted nursing day and night, and no solids before six months), breastfeeding is about 95% - 98% effective as a birth control method. Most women will not have a period during this period of exclusive nursing, but will start their cycle again within a few months of introducing solids. World wide, breastfeeding is the most extensively used method of birth control. Most women in this country don’t practice this type of exclusive breastfeeding, so most will use another method . One of the nicest things about nursing is that you get to go for a while (usually months) without having a period.

Breastfeeding helps your body adjust to the many changes that occur after giving birth. As your baby nurses, two hormones are released – oxytocin, which makes your uterus contract and return to its pre-pregnant state more quickly, minimizing blood loss, and prolaction, which helps you relax. Nursing uses up extra calories, and most mothers find that they lose weight faster (without dieting) than formula feeding moms.

Breastfeeding is easier than bottle-feeding. I once asked a young teenage mom why she chose to breastfeed, and without hesitating, she replied “because I’m lazy!”. Breastmilk is always ready, always the perfect temperature, and doesn’t need to be measured. There are no bottles to clean and transport, and no formula to keep cooled and then warmed. Night feedings are easier because all you have to do is tuck the baby in bed with you and nurse while you both drift off to sleep. Traveling is easier with a nursing baby – so much less to carry. In emergencies (whether ice storms, tornadoes, or being stuck in traffic), breastmilk is always immediately available.

Breastfeeding your infant is satisfying emotionally. That’s not to say that you can’t bond with a bottle-fed infant, but there is a unique closeness between a mother and her nursing child. Nursing mothers tend to be very in tune with their baby’s needs, and that increases not only the baby’s security, but also the mother’s self confidence in her mothering ability. Being able to comfort a sick, fussy, or tired baby at the breast is one of the most satisfying things about breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding provides health benefits for you as well as your baby. There is a lower risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, and osteoporosis in nursing mothers.

Finally, in many countries, babies who aren’t breastfed run the risk of increased death rates from illness, diluted formula, and unsafe water. Choosing not to breastfeed is often a life or death decision in developing countries.

I hope this information has given you something to think about if you are trying
to decide whether or not to breastfeed your baby. If you have already made
your decision, then congratulations. The benefits far outweigh the
disadvantages.
Personally, if I had to choose one advantage of breastfeeding, it would be the way you feel the first time your baby pulls off the breast in the middle of nursing and grins at you with milk drooling out the corner of his mouth while milk sprays everywhere, and then eagerly goes back to finish the feeding. That’s a feeling that money just can’t buy!!!!

The Right Pump Will Enhance the Breastfeeding Experience

necessarily better? Nursing mothers need to consider several factors before
investing in a pump.

One of the many advantages of breastfeeding is that it doesn't cost
anything. Well, at least the milk itself is free. Nevertheless, there are
some expenses that nursing mothers may incur. One of the most significant of those expenses is the breastpump. A mother needs to find a pump that is right for her situation. Since so many options do exist, it is important to understand the differences in the many pumps that are available.

Manual Pumps
Manual pumps are often the least expensive option. A mother who is
only pumping occasionally or who wants to nurse her baby on one side while she pumps the other may prefer this kind of pump. This is not the right pump for a mother who is pumping to maintain her supply or whose baby isn't nursing regularly.

Medela Harmony
This pump actually features a manual version of Medela's 2-Phase
Expression technology. Move it one way, and it is supposed to stimulate letdown. Move it a different way, and it removes milk. This pump comes with a soft silicon breast shield. Once again, though, a mother with hand problems might find the squeezing motion a bit uncomfortable.

Battery Operated Pump
Pumps in this category are more expensive than manual pumps, but they are not necessarily more effective. In fact many lactation consultants discourage the use of battery operated pumps. Some pumps in this category have even caused tissue damage to mothers who turned the suction up too high trying to get the milk out. Another drawback to many of these pumps is the need to continue putting new batteries in them. The only legitimate use for most battery operated pumps would be for the mother who is only pumping occasionally. The one exception to this category is the new Medela Freestyle which has a rechargeable battery feature.

Mini-electric Pumps
Many manufacturers offer small single or double electric pumps that vary widely in their comfort and performance. When evaluating one of these pumps, factors to check include the availability of various breast shield sizes, variable levels for extraction, and ease of use. A mini-electric pump would not be a good choice for a mother who is returning to work and will need to pump more than one time a day. These pumps generally are not recommended for maintaining a milk supply.

Dual Electric Pumps
Several manufacturers offer pumping systems that feature simultaneous collection from both breasts, a powerful motor for good suction, and proven comfort. Double pumping offers several benefits:
Reduced pumping time
Increased prolactin levels
In many cases, increased milk production.
